Side Event COP 29: Prise en compte des tourbières dans la gestion durable des écosystèmes du Bassin du Congo

Le projet « Sécuriser les réserves cruciales de biodiversité, de carbone et d'eau dans les tourbières du bassin du Congo grâce à une prise de décision éclairée et une bonne gouvernance » est mis en oeuvre sous la coordination du PNUE et la couverture institutionnelle du Ministère de l’Environnement et du Développement Durable de la République Démocratique du Congo et du Ministère de l’Environnement, du Développement Durable et du Bassin du Congo de la république du Congo. Dans le cadre de la mise en oeuvre de ce projet, un side-event sera organisé en marge de la COP29, à Baku en Azerbaïdjan, le lundi 18 novembre 2024, de 16h00 à 17h30 dans le pavillon de la Commission Climat du Bassin du Congo (CCBC).

UNEP representatives attend GEF expert workshop on the critical forest biomes to establish a framework for learning and knowledge sharing

UNEP’s Congo Basin Sustainable Landscapes Programme (CBSL) is leading the GEF-7 Congo Basin Impact Programme and the upcoming GEF-8 Congo Critical Forest Biomes Integrated Programme (CFB IP) in six central Africa countries.

Workshop to advance Transboundary Cooperation between Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea for the Conservation of the Campo Ma’an and Rio Campo landscape

A core focus of the UNEP-led Congo Basin Sustainable Landscapes Program is to advance cooperation between countries in the Congo Basin to enable and strengthen mechanisms for the effective management of transboundary landscapes. It was within this framework that a binational technical workshop between the Republic of Cameroon and the Republic of Equatorial Guinea took place in Kribi (Cameroon) from 2-4 October 2024.  The workshop was organized and led by COMIFAC and jointly organized by UNEP representing the GEF-7 Congo Basin Regional Coordination Project, WWF representing the Cameroon national GEF-7 Project, and IUCN representing the Equatorial Guinea national GEF-7 project.

GEF Congo Basin Sustainable Landscapes Impact Program officially launched

On 31st May – 2 June 2022, in Kinshasa, DRC the GEF Congo Basin Sustainable Landscapes Impact Program was officially launched, convening all key partners and stakeholders involved in delivering the Program’s objectives. The workshop was a platform to ensure common understanding of the Program delivery structure and the roles and responsibilities of each partner in the child projects (Implementing Agency, Executing Agency, Component Leads, and Delivery Partners), as well as to establish linkages and synergies across all of the Program’s constitutive projects.

Stakeholder Consultation for Advancing Evidence-Based Hydrological Decision-Making for Peatland Management in the Lac Tele-Lac Tumba Landscape (EN/FR)

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Sustainable Development and the Congo Basin of the Republic of the Congo, and with the support of the UNEP-DHI Partnership – Centre on Water and Environment, convened a stakeholder consultation workshop in Brazzaville on 13–14 March 2025. The workshop was part of the project Securing Crucial Biodiversity, Carbon, and Water Stores in the Congo Basin Peatlands by Enabling Evidence-Based Decision-Making and Good Governance, funded by the German government through the International Climate Initiative (IKI).

Training Workshop on Peatland Monitoring Tools for Application in the Lac Télé/Lac Tumba Landscape of the Congo Basin

As part of the project “Securing Crucial Biodiversity, Carbon and Water Stores in the Congo Basin Peatlands by Enabling Evidence-Based Decision‑Making and Good Governance,” a two-day workshop was organized in Brazzaville on February 10-11 by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), together with the Ministry of the Environment, Sustainable Development and the Congo Basin. Twenty-five participants from national institutions and universities, alongside key partners and stakeholders were trained on peatland monitoring tools.

The GEF Congo Forest Integrated Programme supports efforts to understand and address wildlife trafficking and wildlife crime in Central Africa

Reducing biodiversity loss to support a healthy ecosystem while guarding against disease spillover events between and among animals and people is a focus of the GEF-funded and UNEP-led Congo Forests Integrated Programme. As information around the illegal wildlife trade is key to law enforcement activities in this area, the Programme is developing a knowledge base to support informed decision-making while also enhancing the capacity of law enforcement personnel and officials across the region to combat the killing of and illegal trafficking in Endangered animals.

A new hope for Cameroon’s Ebony tree through a successful Public-Private-Partnership between local communities and a thriving guitar business

Strengthening the ability of local communities to sustainably manage the forests they call home is a main focus of the GEF-funded Congo Forests Integrated Programme led by UNEP under UNEP’s Congo Basin Landscapes Initiative. The Initiative is doing this by supporting local communities to develop and build partnerships between the private sector and local communities to catalyze and scale private sector investment.

Study produces first oil palm map for Central Africa, maps forest loss within great ape ranges and establishes forest loss owing to oil palm

As part of the GEF-funded Congo Forest Integrated Programme (IP), and together with partners, the UNEP-led Congo Basin Landscapes Initiative is tackling the drivers of deforestation and forest degradation by working with local communities to develop integrated transboundary land use management plans that are designed to support biodiversity and conserve forest cover, while ensuring livelihoods remain sustainable and economic opportunities increase for forest dwellers.
